Vol. 199 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Limerick Post Office Fire Escape.

12.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he has received representations from the Department of Posts and Telegraphs regarding the necessity for providing a satisfactory fire escape for the post office staff at the Limerick telephone exchange; and when a suitable fire escape will be provided.

The existing fire escape staircase in this telephone exchange does not serve the top, i.e., the second floor. There is, however, an emergency escape unit from that floor on to an adjoining flat roof from which there is a steel ladder leading to another flat roof some twelve feet above ground level. Representations have been made that this means of escape is unsafe in some respects, and that it is unsuitable for use by female staff. It has been decided, therefore, to extend the existing escape staircase from the first to the second floor, and it is hoped that it will be possible to have the work carried out later this year.

Question No. 13 postponed.
