Vol. 199 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bray Tourist Development.

18.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power when proposals were first made to his Department for the development of Bray, County Wicklow, as a modern tourist centre; and what is the present position in regard to it.

The development of tourist resorts is, under statue, a matter primarily for Bord Fáilte Éireann. Bray has been selected by the Board for development under the Major Resort Development Scheme and I understand that proposals for the development of the resort have been drawn up by the Board after consultation with appropriate local interests.

The only aspect of the Bray proposals with which my Department is directly concerned is an application for a guaranteed loan under the Tourist Traffic Act, 1952, in connection with a small element of the scheme. The application was received in the Department of Industry and Commerce in September, 1961, and, following the subsequent transfer of tourist functions to my Department, was approved, in principle, on 20th December, 1961. In August, 1962, I approved a revised scheme proposed by the applicants and the necessary legal formalities are proceeding.
