Vol. 199 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Road Clearance Grants.

27.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is prepared to make grants available to county councils for snow clearance operations on main and county roads similar to those made available in 1947.

No special grants were made available to county councils for snow clearance operations in 1947, but councils were informed that the expenditure involved could be regarded as ordinary road maintenance costs. This meant that the expenditure was partially recoupable from the Road Fund in certain circumstances and in accordance with the scheme of grants then in operation. In the present instance also snow clearance is regarded as a maintenance operation and, as explained to the Deputy in reply to a previous Question, half the cost is recoupable from grant in the case of main roads.

Is it recoupable in the case of county roads?

There is no maintenance grant in the case of county roads.

I thought the Government might do something this time in order to give them a hand.

The same thing is being done now as was done in 1947.

I appreciate that but I thought they might have got something extra done.
