Vol. 199 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Malahide (Dublin) Water Supply.

9.

asked the Minister for Health whether he is aware that over the weekend ending on the 12th February the water in the Malahide supply area, County Dublin was cloudy in appearance; and that it is believed locally that this was due to the addition of fluoride salt to the Malahide public water supply; and whether he will make a statement in the matter.

The only intimation I received to the effect that the water provided by the public supply in the Malahide area was cloudy in appearance was a telegram which I received on Monday last addressed to me by a Malahide resident. The telegram asked if "extra fluorine" was being introduced.

On enquiry from the Dublin County Council, I ascertained that in recent weeks it became necessary to revert temporarily to the source from which Malahide was formerly supplied with water.

There is no ground whatsoever for a belief that fluorine in any form was at any time added to the supply. Incidentally, I am advised that the addition of fluorides to water does not cause cloudiness.
