Vol. 199 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Acquisition of Housing Land.

34.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether, with a view to speeding up the erection of houses, he will give consideration to the question of shortening the procedure of acquisition by compulsory purchase order of land required for housing purposes.

The procedure relating to the compulsory purchase of land for housing purposes is laid down by statute to enable property owners whose interests are concerned to be given due notice and time to make their case against the proposed acquisition and to be represented at a public local inquiry into the proposal. I think that the procedure could not be shortened without impairing the assurance of such owners that their objections are taken fully into account.

A good deal of delay takes place after the acquisition proceedings have been completed and will the Parliamentary Secretary bear in mind that this procedure is the same today as it was 45 years ago?

I will convey the Deputy's observations to the Minister.
