Vol. 199 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Prosecution of Unlicensed Hauliers.

61.

asked the Minister for Justice (a) the cost of the Garda patrols which have been in operation to intercept lorries without plates in the most recent twelve months available, (b) the cost of prosecuting any offenders who were taken to Court, and (c) the amount of money accruing to the State as a result of fines, etc., over the same period, from unlicensed hauliers who were prosecuted.

The detection and prosecution of cases of unlicensed haulage is one of the duties which are carried out by the Force as a whole, and there are no Gardaí or police cars engaged exclusively on this work. No separate cost figures are kept in relation to these detections or prosecutions, and it is not possible to make an estimate.

A separate record is not kept of fines imposed for haulage offences, and I do not consider that the amount of work involved in ascertaining this particular information would be justified.
