Vol. 201 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Limerick City Housing Needs.

27.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that close on 1,500 families the managements and the unions of in Limerick city are in urgent need of new housing; and, if so, whether he has taken, or proposes to take, any special action to remedy the situation.

I am aware that a substantial number of dwellings is, in the opinion of the housing authority, required to meet the needs of their district. The assessment of need and formulation of building programmes to meet these needs are, of course, functions of that authority. The authority have completed 50 dwellings to date in the current financial year and have 241 dwellings in course of construction. I have approved plans for a further 295 dwellings and I am informed that land already acquired or in course of acquisition will be capable of providing sites for over 1,000 additional dwellings.
