Vol. 202 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Issue of Medical cards.

4.

asked the Minister for Health if he will state for each of the years ended 31st March 1960, 1961, 1962 and 1963 the number of medical cards issued by each health authority, and the percentage of population covered by such medical cards in each health authority area.

As the reply to the question is in the form of a tabular statement, I propose, a Cheann Comhairle, with your permission, to circulate it with the Official Report.

Following is the statement.

Table showing in respect of each health authority area at the 31st March

(a) the number of general medical service cards current

(b) the number of persons covered by these cards, that is, holders and dependents

(c) the percentage of the population covered by medical cards. These figures are based on the 1956 Census in respect of the 31st March, 1960 and on the 1961 Census in respect of the three succeeding years.

The marked reduction shown in the case of (a) Kilkenny County Council as at the 31st March, 1961, as compared with the 31st March, 1960, and (b) Tipperary (SR) County Council as at 31st March, 1962, as compared with the 31st March, 1960 and 1961, resulted from reviews of the General Medical Services Registers by these health authorities as a consequence of which the names of persons which had remained on the Registers, although the people concerned had died or left the health authority area or had otherwise ceased to be entitled to General Medical Services, were deleted.

The figures supplied by the Waterford Health Authority in respect of the 31st March, 1962, as shown above do not correctly represent the position as a substantial number of entries on the General Medical Services Register was inadvertently duplicated and counted twice over.
