Vol. 202 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wicklow Telephone Service.

22.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if his attention has been called to the dissatisfaction of residents and business firms in Wicklow town with the telephone service in that area; if he is aware that the delays of about half-an-hour on Dublin calls and from one to three hours on cross-Channel calls are prejudicing the business and goodwill of business firms in the area; and if he will take immediate steps to ensure that an adequate telephone service is provided in the area without delay.

I am aware that delays have been occurring on calls from Wicklow to Dublin. These have been mainly due to circuit faults resulting from damage caused to the main route by the recent severe weather. Much of this damage is not apparent on inspection and can only be detected as faults arise. Micro wave radio links which will provide ample permanent circuiting of high quality for Wicklow are under construction and are expected to be brought into service within the next few months.
