Vol. 202 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Non-Delivery of Postal Packets.

24.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs what steps have been taken to ascertain the cause of the non-delivery of postal packets containing money orders to an address (supplied), and to ensure that like packets do not disappear in future.

25.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the number of complaints received by him relating to post office box No. 228, Rathmines, Dublin; and if he will explain how postal items addressed to that box have not been received by the holders thereof.

With your permission a Cheann Comhairle I propose to answer Questions Nos. 24 and 25 together. Since post office box No. 228 was rented in November, 1960, a total of 152 unregistered postal items addressed to the renter have been reported missing. The assumption is that they were stolen in the post. The Department's Investigation Section has given the matter special attention and a postman is awaiting trial on charges of theft from the post including the theft of an item addressed to the renter of the box in question.

Pay them a decent wage and they will not pinch anything.

That does not necessarily follow.

And then you will grumble about the expense.

I was wondering how long he could behave himself.
