Vol. 202 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Industrial Schools.

31.

asked the Minister for Education if he will give in relation to industrial schools in the State (a) their number, names and where situated, (b) the number of pupils in each school, (c) the number of teachers in each school, (d) the number on the administrative staff of each school, and (e) the amount contributed by the Government and by local authorities in the last financial year to each school.

My Department has not particulars of the administrative staff in industrial schools as such appointments are the responsibility of the resident managers of the schools.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to give the remainder of the information sought in the form of a tabular statement, which will be circulated with the Official Report.

Following is the statement:—

TABLE showing number of children in each of the 48 industrial schools in the State on 31st December, 1962, the number of primary teachers on the staff and the amount of capitation maintenance grant paid by the State to each school in the last financial year.

NOTE: (i) In 19 out of the 48 industrial schools, instruction in primary education is given on the premises. In the remainder, the children attend local national schools. The statistics in column (3) relate to the former category.

(ii) The rate of capitation maintenance grant is 45/- per week shared equally by the State and the local authorities. Capitation maintenance grants paid to the schools by the local authorities approximate to the figures shown in column (4) for the same period.
