Vol. 202 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Heating, Cleaning and Maintenance of Schools.

33.

asked the Minister for Education whether his attention has been drawn to the protests made at the annual conference of the Irish National Teachers' Organisation with regard to the heating, cleaning and maintenance of national schools; whether he is aware that at that conference it was widely advocated that teachers should refuse to work in schools which were inadequate in these respects; and whether he will now, in consultation with the INTO, throughly re-examine the question of the heating, cleaning and maintenance of national schools with a view to improving the present position.

As I indicated in reply to the Deputy's question on 14th February last, the position in regard to the heating and cleaning of national schools is under review. Any revision of the present arrangements will involve consultation with all the parties concerned.

The maintenance of national schools, apart from painting, is a matter for the managers. Grants of up to two-thirds of the cost of internal and external painting are available from the Department provided that all other works of maintenance have been properly carried out. This grants scheme came into operation on 1st April, 1962.
