Vol. 204 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Drainage of Westmeath River.

11.

asked the Minister for Finance what is the position regarding drainage of the Camlin river, County Westmeath; and if there are any proposals for a temporary drainage scheme, pending its inclusion in a main catchment scheme for the area.

The Camlin river is the main river of the Longford catchment area discharging into the Shannon which is included as No. 15 in the approved priority list for treatment under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945. That Act provides for the carrying out of schemes on a catchment area basis and the Commissioners of Public Works have no proposals for temporary works on the river.

In connection with the last two questions, I would like to ask if it is appropriate that the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Finance should declare sanctions which, as far as I am aware, are within the jurisdiction of the Minister for Local Government? If a county council desires to carry out a certain work, that work has to be sanctioned and I understand that it is the Minister for Local Government who has to give that sanction.

Not in this case.

We seem to be getting very confused in this House.

The Minister for Health should keep quiet.

I thought the Deputies would be delighted to know that the work could be carried out.

Will a grant be available from the Department of Finance or from the Department of Local Government to carry out this work?

Put down a question.

The question is down. Will a Government grant be available towards the cost of doing this work?

Question No. 12.
