Vol. 204 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Duty on Beet Insecticide.

33.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce for what reason he imposed a duty on Roger E, which is so necessary for saving the beet crop this year.

The customs duty was re-imposed in 1954 to protect the manufacture of disinfectants, insecticides and similar products. Supplies of an insecticide similar to the one referred to are available from home sources.

Surely the Minister will accept the fact that he would not have had the representations from the NFA and other qualified persons, if this were not necessary for treatment of the beet crop?

I have received no representations, and I might remind the Deputy that this duty has been in force since 1932, interrupted only during the war years solely because there was a shortage of materials on this side.

This only came on the market some time ago.

We have as good a product ourselves.

An Foras Talúntais have proved we have better here.

At the same price?
