Vol. 204 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Turnover Tax.

8.

asked the Minister for Finance the number of protests against the proposed turnover tax which have been received in his Department between the introduction of the Budget and 1st July.

I have kept no record of the number of communications—by way of inquiry, suggestion and protest —received in my Department about the turnover tax.

9.

asked the Minister if his attention has been drawn to a statement made by the chairman of a large Dublin company (name supplied) on 3rd July that in the retail food trade the proposed turnover tax must and will be passed on to the consumer in its entirety; and if he has any statement to make in the matter.

My attention has been drawn to the statement to which the Deputy refers.

On several occasions in the course of the debates on the Finance Bill, I dealt with the question of passing on the tax and I also issued a special statement through the Government Information Bureau to remove any doubts as to my attitude in the matter. From the beginning, I have acted on the assumption that the turnover tax would be passed on to the consumer in its entirety. The Deputy will recall that I have arranged for compensatory payments for the less well-off sections of the community and for families with children.
