Vol. 205 No. 10

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Purchase of Dublin Corporation Houses.

35.

Mr. Belton

asked the Minister for Local Government if Dublin Corporation have approached him, at the request of tenants living in houses numbered 53 to 107, Donnycarney Road, who wish to purchase their houses but are prevented from doing so because of the law as it stands; and if he will consider amending the relevant Act to enable a Corporation tenant to purchase his house, if he so wishes.

As regards the first part of the question, I have not been so approached. As regards the second part, the law as it stands does not prevent Dublin Corporation from introducing a sale scheme in respect of any of its houses.

Mr. Belton

Is the Minister aware that Dublin Corporation incur considerable expenditure on repairing and maintaining these houses and would he not consider amending the law so that tenants can buy houses, if they wish, at current market value?

There is no debarment by law from such an arrangement being entered into by the Corporation and their tenants. It is really a matter of policy by the Corporation.

Mr. Ryan

Surely the Minister is aware that Dublin Corporation would be disposed to bring in such a purchase scheme if the Government would agree to maintain in respect of urban houses the subsidies they allocate in respect of rural houses?

Of course I am aware of that but it has nothing to do with this question.

Mr. Ryan

Is it not the only thing that is holding this up?
