Vol. 206 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sugar Prices.

7.

asked the Taoiseach (a) the present price at which refined sugar is being exported to the United States and (b) the present world price of refined sugar.

I presume the first part of the Deputy's question refers to a consignment of sugar sent to the United States this month. If so, the relevant documents have not yet been brought to account and it is not, therefore, possible to state the f.o.b. export price at which the consignment was valued.

Since there is not a free world market in refined sugar, it is not possible to give a precise answer to the second part of the Deputy's question. It can, however, be stated that the price of British granulated sugar for export f.a.s. London or Liverpool was £111 per ton yesterday. This price has varied very considerably in the current year.
