Vol. 207 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Reinstatement of Former Members of Garda Síochána.

144.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will introduce legislation with a view to reinstating members of the Garda Síochána who left the Force because of inadequate pay rates, or for other valid reasons, and who are still of good character, suitable physically and anxious to obtain reinstatement.

The statutory regulations which provide for the recruitment of entrants to the Garda Síochána also empower the Commissioner, subject to the consent of the Minister for Justice, to appoint former members of the Force. The policy is to exercise the power of appointment only in a very limited category of cases where resignation was due to special stated reasons. It would not be in accordance with this policy to reinstate persons who resigned because of dissatisfaction with their conditions of service.
