Vol. 207 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ballinlass (Galway) Holding.

81.

asked the Minister for Lands what progress has been made by the Land Commission towards the acquisition of the holding of Mr. John Gaffney, Ballinlass, Ballinamore Bridge, County Galway.

Efforts by the Land Commission to purchase this 51 acre holding proved unsuccessful. I understand that the lands were sold by public auction last October, the purchaser being a local man.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that the holdings in that locality are from £7 to £9 valuation, that a number of these smallholders went to the Land Commission office in Galway, asked them to purchase this land and that, so far, the Land Commission have made no attempt to do so?

They made very positive efforts to do so, but the negotiations were abortive.

Like most of the Land Commission's negotiations.

I can assure the Deputy that the matter is being kept under review.
