Vol. 207 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Laois Estates.

82.

asked the Minister for Lands what is the present position in so far as the Land Commission are concerned in regard to the acquisition and division of the Estate of the Reps. of Major Chetwood-Aiken, Woodbrook, Portarlington, County Laois, Record No. S.21760, amongst the many local applicants, all of whom are smallholders and anxious to be considered for portions; and if the Land Commission will take immediate action with a view to the division of these lands so as to be in time for the sowing of this year's crop.

The late owner's objection to acquisition of this estate has been withdrawn by his elderly widow and the Land Commissioners have made an Order the effect of which is to place a stay on their acquisition proceedings for her lifetime.

83.

asked the Minister for Lands the results of the investigations carried out by the Land Commission with a view to the acquisition and division of the Trench Estate, Ballybrittas and Ballyshaenduff, County Laois, Record No. U.20681; and if these lands will be divided amongst the many local deserving applicants, all of whom are smallholders and take land by conacre; and if action will be taken in view of the special circumstances and the great local congestion in this area.

On the basis of a recent inspection of this estate the Land Commission have decided that proceedings for acquisition of the property would not at present be warranted.
