Vol. 207 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sheep Grazing on Galtee Mountains.

88.

asked the Minister for Lands what arrangements were made and agreed on between the Forestry Branch of his Department and the hill sheep men on the Galtee-Tincurry-Cahir mountains; and if he is aware that the hill sheep men have grazed the Tincurry-Cahir mountains for hundreds of years, and that it is their only means of making a living.

Since the acquisition of this estate for forestry purposes last year, the position of the graziers in the Tincurry area has been carefully examined and was discussed in detail on the ground with the people concerned. The agreed arrangements provide for planting of some of the former grazing ground but leave a very substantial area still available for grazing purposes, including some of the lower hill ground which is quite suitable for forestry purposes. The needs of the small numbers now interested in sheepraising on this mountain have been fully met.
