Vol. 207 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Telephone Applications and Installations.

97.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the number of telephones installed in County Wexford during the year 1963.

The number is 195.

98.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the number of applicants awaiting a telephone in County Wexford; and when such applicants may expect to have their telephones installed.

The number is 230 approximately. Some 65 of these will be dealt with in the next few months. Because of the necessary concentration on urgent long-term work in the interest of subscribers generally, it may not be possible for some time to clear the remaining applications.

99.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the date on which Mr. Denis O'Dwyer of Osberstown, Naas, County Kildare, made an application for a telephone; and when it is expected that provision will be made.

The application in question was made on the 11th November 1961 and service was provided on the 20th of this month.

That is, three years.

Does it not strike the Minister himself as bewildering to have a situation in which a man living in Naas has to wait three years for a telephone?

There are a few people still waiting but there are thousands of other people who have got connections during the three years.

Is that not a daft situation?

It is daft in other countries, too. Even in France recently, the same situation was explained in Parliament by the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs there, and in England.

100.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will arrange for the installation of a public telephone at Staplestown, Donadea, County Kildare.

The use likely to be made of a telephone kiosk at the place in question would not be sufficient to justify its provision.
