Vol. 207 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Post-Primary Comprehensive Schools.

116.

asked the Minister for Education what progress, if any, has been made in regard to plans for post-primary comprehensive schools for areas of scattered population; and if he will state the number initially proposed and their location.

The preliminary survey in relation to certain areas has been completed. Negotiations are proceeding in a number of cases. I am not, however, in a position at present to give details as to numbers and location of the proposed comprehensive schools.

Can the Minister say how many schools are proposed to be located in the original plan? I understand it is already announced in West Cavan that one is scheduled for installation there. Is the Minister prepared to confirm or deny that?

I am not in a position to make any announcement.

Even how many there are?

The comprehensive school building is a small part of the total educational plan and will extend to large areas in the west. Detailed surveys and examinations of possible follow-on education and opportunities in existing schools would be required before I could say how many precisely. We will have to put them up as they are needed.

The Minister will be more revealing when we come to his Estimate?

I am not in a position to do so on last year's Estimate but I will be on this year's Estimate, I hope.
