Vol. 208 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Condition of Dublin River.

28.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that the condition of the Camac River in Dublin has seriously deteriorated in recent years owing to the failure of the Dublin Corporation and the Dublin County Council to prevent pollution of the stream and to keep the course of the river free of obstruction and refuse; and if he will now ensure that immediate steps are taken to clean and culvert the river.

I am aware that the condition of the Camac River has been a cause of concern in recent years. I am informed that Dublin City Council recently instructed the City Manager to have a scheme prepared for the culverting of the river in the city area, and that a scheme is being prepared. The position as regards pollution in the county area is being kept under review by Dublin County Council.

Mr. Ryan

Does the Minister recall that it is some three years since I described this river or stream as a "stinking stream"? I am sure I would be pulled up by you, Sir, for unparliamentary language if I were to apply a more appropriate adjective now. We were told four years ago that directions had been issued to remedy the pollution and the nuisance caused by this stream. Since then the matter has become worse instead of better and can the Minister now give an assurance that every possible step will be taken by the local authorities and his Department to culvert this river and prevent any further pollution?

I am just wondering if the Deputy has been at his own local authority meetings during the past three years.

Mr. Ryan

The Minister knows well that I have been because I have caused him embarrassment on many occasions and would the Minister stop pouring forth a dirty stream of abuse and have this river culverted?

We will probably culvert the Deputy as well as the stream.

Mr. Ryan

Nothing will be done?

The Deputy did not attend a single committee meeting dealing with the matter.

Mr. Ryan

Another polluted stream pours forth.
