Vol. 208 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Local Authority Wages and Salaries.

29.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state the amount contributed by his Department towards the wages and salaries bill of local authorities, other than vocational education committees and county committees of agriculture, which amounted to £23,151,668 during the year ended 31st March 1963; and if he can now state the estimated total wages and salaries which will have been paid by 31st March, 1964, giving similar details.

The expenditure of local authorities on salaries or wages is not recouped from State funds as a separate item. The majority of State grants vary in proportion to relevant local expenditure which would include expenditure on salaries and wages. The estimated cost of the wages and salaries of local authority officers and employees in respect of the present financial year is not available in my Department.
