Vol. 209 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mentally Retarded School Children.

26.

asked the Minister for Education if he will give details of transport and other subsidies provided for children attending day schools for the mentally retarded.

My Department gives grants towards the cost of special transport services for the conveyance of day pupils to certain special national schools for mentally retarded children. The grants are calculated on the basis of the costs incurred by the manager of each school and vary from school to school.

In addition, annual grants are made to these schools for the purchase of equipment and teaching aids.

May I ask the Minister if the amount actually paid is in the region of £1 or 25/- per bus and that this puts an undue strain on the voluntary organisation attempting to cater for these children? If the organisation put up a concrete scheme to the Minister, would he consider it favourably and so relieve the organisation concerned?

These grants are not paid on the basis of so much per bus. There is a different scale.
