Vol. 209 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Post Office Drivers.

16.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the manner in which his Department recruit drivers; the qualifications necessary for such appointments; the location and staff of driving-training depots; the duration of the intensive course of instruction referred to in a reply of 21st April last; and the number of instructors and their qualifications.

Departmental drivers are selected from existing personnel, with particular reference to physical fitness and general aptitude for driving duties. Training is carried out at Dublin. The staff consists of the inspector of mechanical transport, an assistant inspector of mechanical transport, four instructors and a skilled motor mechanic. The training course normally lasts 9/10 days. The qualities sought in instructors are a sound practical knowledge of driving, a good driving record, personality, general intelligence and a capacity to impart knowledge.
