Vol. 209 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Corporation Houses and Flats.

16.

asked the Minister for Local Government how many Corporation houses and flats the Dublin Corporation propose to erect during the coming year.

I understand that under their existing programme Dublin Corporation expect to complete a total of 929 dwellings by traditional methods in 1964/65. This total comprises 584 houses and 345 flats.

17.

asked the Minister for Local Government how many applications for flats in Corporation housing schemes remain to be satisfied by the Dublin Corporation; and when it is expected that these needs will be satisfied.

I understand that Dublin Corporation have on hands a total of 3,421 applications for flats, of which a total of 2,107 have been recommended for rehousing. The housing authority's present programme provides for the erection of a total of 1,648 flats by traditional building methods during the three years commencing 1st April, 1964. However, the Corporation are still reserving 90 per cent of all new tenancies for persons being rehoused from dangerous buildings and I am thus not in a position to give a definite indication as to when the applications for flats from other classes of recommended applicants can be met.

The Minister has said what the Corporation programme is by traditional methods. The Minister, however, is aware that the Corporation may embark on a system of building which will bring in a further 1,700 plots by the end of 1967.

I think, as Deputy Sherwin knows, the Minister for Local Government is pressing very hard for such a development.

And it will come.

I suggest Deputy Sherwin should answer the Minister's questions to-day.
