Vol. 210 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cork-Mallow Road.

32.

asked the Minister for Local Government the date on which Cork County Council submitted to his Department plans regarding the proposed new main Cork-Mallow road; and the present position regarding them.

Preliminary plans and estimates of cost for the improvement of the Cork-Mallow road were submitted by the Cork County Council to my Department in September, 1962. The improvement of the route as envisaged by the council is a major project involving expenditure of about three-quarters of a million pounds. My Department's engineering advisers are not in a position to make a firm recommendation as to the appropriate design standard to which the route should be improved pending the compilation and analysis of additional data on traffic flows thereon. This forms part of the nation-wide traffic census and study which is at present being conducted by my Department into the entire main road network. On completion of the analysis, I shall be in a position to indicate to the Cork County Council whether the Cork-Mallow road should be designed as a Class I (dual carriageway) or Class II (single carriageway) road.
