Vol. 210 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Increased Social Welfare Benefits.

21.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if his attention has been drawn to a statement by the Chairman of the Rehabilitation Association that social welfare benefits are so low in the country that many people are suffering from semi-starvation; and if he has any proposals to increase these benefits.

I have seen brief press reports of the statement mentioned. I am not clear that the statement refers to benefits for which my Department is responsible, but if it does, I no not accept it as accurate. As the Deputy is no doubt aware, social security payments are continually being increased within the limit of available resources. The latest increase in social insurance payments was made in January of this year and in assistance payments in November, 1963; a further increase in certain assistance payments will become effective next August.
