Vol. 212 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Recruitment of Housing Inspectors.

13.

asked the Minister for Local Government if it is a fact that his Department is experiencing difficulty in recruiting inspectors for purposes of inspecting premises in respect of which applications for repair or reconstruction grants have been made; and if the difficulty is largely due to the unsatisfactory rates of remuneration offered to such officers.

Housing inspectors engaged on grant inspection work in my Department are recruited through the Civil Service Commission and the salary scale offered is the same as that applicable to similar professional grades throughout the Civil Service. The volume of housing grant work is steadily increasing thus creating a need for additional inspectors. Any difficulties being experienced appear to be no more than the difficulties being met with by public authorities generally in recent times in recruiting and retaining a sufficient number of professional officers, due to an overall increase in the demand for such officers.
