Vol. 212 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Condition of Post Office Vans.

78.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs why a van, registered number ZU 7713, the property of his Department, was on 22nd September 1964 permitted to be used on the streets of Dublin in so defective a condition that it emitted clouds of noxious exhaust fumes.

79.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs what steps are taken to ensure that all mechanically propelled vehicles in his Department are maintained so as to prevent them from emitting noxious exhaust fumes on public streets.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to answer Questions Nos. 78 and 79 together.

All units of the Department's motor fleet are serviced at prescribed mileage intervals and there is also a system of fault reporting and inspection. These arrangements ordinarily guard against excessive discharge from engine exhausts.

The particular van referred to was, owing to exceptional circumstances, kept in service for a few weeks beyond its due overhaul date.
