Vol. 212 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Secondary School Teachers.

89.

asked the Minister for Education the number of teachers employed in secondary schools in the Republic; and the number of such teachers (a) holding the required qualifications and (b) who are not qualified to teach in secondary schools.

The total number of teachers employed in secondary schools in the school-year 1963-64 was 6,161 of whom 4,543 were in full-time employment. Of this latter number 3,824 held the qualification necessary for registration, that is, a university degree plus an approved post-graduate Diploma in Education or alternatively the appropriate Teacher's Diploma in Domestic Science, Art, Music or Physical Education. A further 419 teachers held a university degree or its equivalent. Most of these 419 were in this way obtaining the teaching experience necessary to enable them to qualify for the Higher Diploma in Education.

The remainder were mostly young members of religious communities serving periods of probation as part of their training.
