Vol. 212 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Provision For Mentally Handicapped Children.

95.

asked the Minister for Education what plans his Depart ment have for the increased provision of education, rehabilitation and training of mentally-handicapped children; and when such plans will be put into effect.

Applications made to my Department for the recognition of special schools for mildly or moderately mentally handicapped children are examined sympathetically. At present there are 20 special schools for these children in receipt of State grants.

The question of the need for further schemes by my Department for the benefit of mentally handicapped children will be considered when the report and recommendations of the Commission on Mental Handicap is available.
