Vol. 212 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - CIE Pensions Negotiations.

23.

andMr. Ryan asked the Minister for Transport and Power whether negotiations between Coras Iompair Éireann and the trade unions, following on the pensions commission's report, have been concluded; and, if so, if the position of the existing pensioners has been considered.

CIE and the Trade Unions have agreed to accept the interim pensions scheme for the Board's wages grade staff recommended by the CIE Pensions Commission and I understand that an amending superannuation scheme to give effect to the interim proposals is being drawn up by the Board and will be submitted to me shortly for confirmation, by order, under section 44 of the Transport Act, 1950. The interim scheme will be retrospective to 1st April, 1963, and will apply to wages grade pensioners who retired since that date.

Arising out of the commission's report, I authorised the payment of increases in pension by CIE, on an exgratia basis, to the Board's wages grade pensioners who retired before 1st April, 1963. Details of the increases granted were announced by CIE on 21st May, 1964.

Negotiations between CIE and the trade unions will continue about a permanent pensions scheme for the Board's wages grade staff as recommended in the Pensions Commission report.
