Vol. 213 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Civil Service University Scholarship Scheme.

29.

asked the Minister for Finance the total number of scholarships and their cost awarded to members of the Civil Service to undergo university training since the initiation of the scheme, and the number of persons using the scheme who on completion of their course (a) have returned to the Service and (b) have left it.

I assume that the Deputy's question relates to the scheme for the university training of executive officers.

Since the initiation of the scheme in 1960, 11 scholarships have been awarded. Each scholarship consists of the grant of special leave with pay to enable the officer concerned to pursue an appropriate honours degree university course and the payment of the university fees relating to that course. Expenditure to date on these scholarships amounts to £10,780.

Six officers, so far, have completed the courses in respect of which they were awarded scholarships. Five of these have returned to the Service; one resigned on completion of his course.
