Vol. 213 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - EEC Membership.

2.

asked the Taoiseach whether he is aware that in EEC countries such as France, Italy and the Netherlands there has developed a pattern of severe inflationary pressures; and that price movements and trade patterns have brought about significant disequilibrium in the Community and the likelihood of a further deterioration; and whether in the circumstances the Government consider it justifiable to adhere to their repeatedly declared intention to seek full membership by 1970.

The economic developments in the European Economic Community referred to in the question do not appear to be such as to necessitate reconsideration of the Government's policy in relation to membership of the Community.

3.

asked the Taoiseach whether it is a fact that Spain, Nigeria, Austria, Morocco and the eighteen independent African States have sought or established agreements for association with the EEC; and if a similar type of association is now to be sought by the Republic.

I am aware that the countries mentioned have sought or established arrangements of one kind or another with the European Economic Community. As regards the second part of the question, I would refer the Deputy to my reply to a question addressed to me in this House on the 18th November, 1964.
