Vol. 213 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Housing Loans.

53.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that the maximum housing loan of £2,250 is completely out of date at present-day prices of houses; and that the lowest deposit which a person has to pay is now in excess of £300; if he has any information that a number of builders will not accept deposits until the price of houses has become stabilised; and if he will consider taking steps to increase the amount of loan allowed in order to enable more people to buy houses who are anxious to do so.

This question is kept under continuous review by me. From enquiries which I have made from a number of local authorities, I am not satisfied that an increase in the existing limit fixed in June this year would be warranted at the present time. I am not aware that builders have been refusing deposits as suggested by the Deputy.

As the Parliamentary Secretary is aware of building costs in this country, does he consider that reply is reasonable? Does he not know the figure bears no relation to present-day building costs?

That is so, but the maximum limit was increased from £2,000 to £2,250.

It does not matter. It still does not bear any relation to costs.

The matter is under constant review.
