Vol. 213 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Accommodation for Itinerants.

63.

asked the Minister for Local Government if in connection with the provision of accommodation for itinerants he will state the maximum amount which may be made available by the Government by way of grant or loan for the provision of such accommodation; and the basis on which such payments, if any, may be made.

Subsidy will be payable towards the annual loan charges on borrowing by local authorities to meet the capital cost of approved works for the establishment of camping sites for itinerants, including the cost of land acquisition and provision of sanitary facilities and other amenities. The maximum subsidy will be at the rate of two-thirds of the local authority's annual loan charges.

In the case of permanent dwellings for itinerants, grants or subsidy would be payable in accordance with the usual statutory provisions which are summarised in the White Paper on Housing recently circulated to Deputies and Senators.

Assistance to voluntary groups which are helping in the resettlement of itinerants will also be available. The question of the extent and form of the assistance to be given to such groups will be dependent on the type of activities which they will be prepared to undertake.
