Vol. 214 No. 8

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Tax Relief for Exports of Day-old Chicks.

38.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that the principal exporters of day-old chicks have decided to close down owing mainly to the fact that they have been refused tax relief on their exports; and, if so, if he will now decide to provide tax relief for exports from this industry.

The answer to the first part of the question is in the negative. As regards the second part of the question, I would refer the Deputy to the answer I gave in reply to a similar question tabled by him on 21st November, 1962.

Why is there a differentiation between a tax remission in respect of a project like day-old chicks and one for mushroom producers who are entitled to tax relief in respect of exports?

This tax was first given to companies for the export of manufactured articles. A few were added afterwards—fish farmers and mushrooms. I do not want to add too many exceptions to the rule.

In view of the importance of this, would the Minister reconsider the matter?

It should be considered.

Things like that are being considered all the time.
