Vol. 214 No. 8

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Eradication of Brucellosis.

78.

(South Tipperary) asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will make a statement on the present position in relation to brucellosis outlining any proposals with a view to its eradication.

A detailed survey by my Department's veterinary staff has shown that the incidence of brucellosis is light in the west and north-west, but rather pronounced in the south.

Our programme is to start area eradication in some of the low-incidence counties as soon as the necessary legislation is passed and to commence within the next few months a programme of controlled calfhood vaccination in high-incidence counties. In addition, a voluntary scheme for the registration of brucellosis-free herds will be introduced within the next few months.
