Vol. 216 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Trade Discussions with British Government.

1.

asked the Taoiseach when he hopes to finalise the discussions being held between this country and the British Government; and at what level such discussions are being held.

It is not possible at this stage to say how soon the trade discussions with Britain are likely to be completed.

As the Deputy is aware, it was agreed at my meeting with the British Prime Minister in London on 5th November, 1964, that officials should examine the possibilities of improving permanent trading arrangements between the two countries. This examination is at present proceeding at official level and will be taken up at Ministerial level at the appropriate time.

The Minister will appreciate that these negotiations have gone on now for six months. Could he indicate if any real progress has been made or not?

I have nothing to add to the answer I have given the Deputy.

In other words, it simply means that after six months of negotiation, the Government have no statement at all to make to Dáil Éireann.

That is not so. I have told the Deputy what is going on.

The Minister has given me absolutely no information.
