Vol. 216 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Agricultural Advisers.

43.

asked the Minister for Agriculture the number of (a) permanent agricultural advisers and (b) temporary advisers at present working under the control of the county committees of agriculture.

At the end of May, 1965, there were 213 permanent agricultural advisers, inclusive of chief agricultural officers and deputy chief agricultural officers, and 67 temporary agricultural advisers employed by committees of agriculture.

44.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he will take steps to provide that all temporary advisers become permanent after a probationary period.

Under the Local Authorities (Officers and Employees) Act, 1926, all permanent appointments of instructors under committees of agriculture must be made through open competitions held by the Local Appointments Commissioners. I think that this is the right system.

I may add that, in view of the present expansion in the agricultural advisory service, especially in the west where I am giving increased financial aid to the committees of agriculture for this purpose, it seems likely that most of the temporary agricultural advisers should be able to obtain permanent posts within a relatively short period.
