Vol. 216 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - 1916 Commemoration Stamps.

51.

Mr. O'Leary

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether any further details are yet available on the series of special stamps to be issued in commemoration of the fiftieth anniversary of the 1916 Rising.

It has been decided to issue a series of eight special postage stamps in April 1966 in commemoration of the fiftieth anniversary of the 1916 Rising. Seven of the stamps will each bear a portrait of a signatory of the 1916 Proclamation. The portraits will be based on drawings by the late Seán O'Sullivan, the originals of which are in the National Museum. The eighth stamp will commemorate the Rising in a more general way. Suggested designs for the stamps are being considered by the Stamp Design Advisory Committee.

Will they be better than the present one?

That is a matter of opinion.

I can assure the Minister the present designs are not very good.

The Design Committee are very capable.

Will the Minister consider using the word "Ireland" instead of "Eire"?
