Vol. 216 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Army Married Quarters.

29.

asked the Minister for Defence the cost of the four houses bought for use as officers' married quarters to replace the quarters in Beggar's Bush handed over to the Commissioners of Public Works for use by the Stationery Office.

It is not the practice to disclose information of the nature requested by the Deputy.

30.

asked the Minister for Defence the number of married quarters (a) with, and (b) without electricity power plugs and supply.

There are 170 married quarters erected since 1954 for other ranks in which power plugs were installed in the course of building. Plugs have not been provided in most of the 881 older type quarters. The question of providing plugs in these quarters is at present under consideration.

Hear, hear.

31.

asked the Minister for Defence the extent of repairs required and when they will be carried out to married quarters in Sarsfield Barracks, Limerick; if it is intended to erect any new houses to provide married quarters; and, if so, when.

I am not aware that the married quarters in Sarsfield Barracks are in need of anything more than minor repairs which will be carried out as is customary in the course of ordinary barrack maintenance.

The Vote for Defence for the present financial year includes a provision for the erection of six "other ranks" married quarters at Sarsfield Barracks. It is hoped to put the scheme in hands at an early date.

32.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will arrange that the electrical system provided in married quarters in Sarsfield Barracks, Limerick will be changed to permit occupants to use electricity for purposes other than lighting.

The question of providing the necessary points to enable the use of electricity for purposes other than lighting in all married quarters, including those at Sarsfield Barracks, Limerick, is at present under consideration.
