Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Water Supply Schemes.

53.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the grave discontent of the people of Achill Island, County Mayo, regarding the delay in extending the water supply scheme to many residents who were included in the original plans; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am not so aware. Planning of extensions to the recently completed Stage 1 of the Achill regional water supply scheme has now reached an advanced stage. I approved of an extension to serve the Buncurry, Cashel and Saulia areas on 26th March, last. Further proposals for an extension to serve Doogort, The Valley, Donniver, are at present being examined by my technical advisers and I hope to convey a decision thereon to Mayo County Council shortly. I understand that it is hoped to advertise both these extensions for tenders at the same time. I am also informed that proposals for extension to serve the Sraheens, Bleanaskill, Ashleam, Dooega, Camport and Cloughmore areas are almost completed by the council's consulting engineer and will be submitted to the council shortly.

asked the Minister for Local Government when work will start on the Inch and Castlemaine regional water scheme, County Kerry.

The council are not yet in a position to say when work is likely to be started on this scheme. I approved of the preliminary report on 28th October, 1964. I understand that contract documents for the scheme are at present being examined by the county engineer and will be submitted to my Department shortly.

asked the Minister for Local Government the present position in relation to the proposed water scheme to serve the Rockbrook area, County Dublin.

Preliminary proposals for a water supply scheme to serve the Rockbrook and other areas have been approved by me but I understand that further planning of the scheme has been held up pending acquisition of water rights. Applications for Provisional Orders under the Water Supplies Act, 1942, were received from Dublin County Council in March, 1964, in connection with the proposed taking of a supply of water from certain streams for the scheme and legal difficulties in relation to the consideration of the applications have been the subject of correspondence with the council. These have now been disposed of and arrangements are being made to hold a public local inquiry into the applications.
