Vol. 216 No. 8

Redundant Workers (Severance Pay and Compensation) Bill, 1965: First Stage.

I move that leave be granted to introduce a Bill entitled an Act to provide minimum terms for the payment of severance pay and compensation for employees (employed under a contract of service or employment) and who are dismissed because of redundancy or other causes beyond their control.

The First Stage is opposed.

Why is it opposed?

There will be no debate on this Stage.

I hope there will be a Government Bill on this matter.

Therefore, what would be the harm in allowing the First Stage now? We might want the House to divide on it.

You cannot have a division on this Stage, which will come up again the first day of Private Members' Time.

It is very complicated.
