Vol. 217 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Enniscorthy Houses.

45.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he has received an application from the Enniscorthy Urban District Council for approval to purchase the Armstrong Range Houses, Enniscorthy, County Wexford; and, if so, when a decision will be made.

I have received a request from Enniscorthy urban district council for approval to the acquisition and repair of 30 houses at Armstrong's Range. I am advised that they are substandard and defective in many respects, and that a detailed survey will be necessary to ascertain the extent and cost of the repairs and reconstruction required to rehabilitate them. The housing authority are being informed accordingly.

They have been?

They are being.

I trust it will be done soon.

It is being done today.

Did the urban council not explain that one reason why they wanted to buy over these houses was to ensure that they would be in fair condition for the tenants? I think they admit that they are somewhat substandard but the purpose is to acquire them to put them into proper condition.

From our examination, it appears that even after what the council propose to do, they will still be rather substandard, and our information is now being furnished to the urban council with a view to getting them to improve them a little further than what is proposed. The standard they propose to bring them up to is still substandard.

Proposed by the urban council?

——is not adequate either.

The tenants will be glad to hear that.
