Vol. 217 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Issue of Grants.

5.

(South Tipperary) asked the Minister for External Affairs if he will list the bodies in the State under the aegis of his Department which are entitled to issue grants direct, stating the type of grant in each case.

The Cultural Relations Committee, which is a voluntary body, makes recommendations for the awarding of grants for cultural relations with other countries. If the Minister for External Affairs approves a recommendation, the grant is paid from subhead E of the Vote for External Affairs.

An Bord Scoláireachtaí Cómalairte, which was established by Scholarship Exchange (Ireland and the United States of America) Act, 1957, awards grants for educational exchange between Ireland and the United States of America. The Minister for External Affairs has no function in approving or rejecting such grants. The Department of External Affairs, however, provides the secretarial services for An Bord on a repayment basis.
