Vol. 217 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Turkey Market.

48.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries what steps are being taken to improve the export turkey market for the coming year.

The level of the export market for turkeys is determined primarily by the supplies in Britain from home sources. Until information is available in a few weeks' time as to the likely output of British and Irish turkeys this year, it would be premature to say what action, if any, may be possible here.

Does the Minister propose to take any steps? Now is the time to do so, not coming on to Christmas when the people cannot sell the turkeys. In the Second Programme for Economic Expansion we read about asking the farmers to increase their production. I am asking the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he will see to it that if the turkey breeders increase production they will have a market for them, or what steps is he taking? There is no reply. They can hang the turkeys around their necks.

Sometimes, it is more charitable to refrain from replying.

We are all in the same boat at times.

If the Minister goes down the country, he will get his reply.
